Redwork Embroidery

The PTGA scholarship fundraiser this year is a queensize redwork quilt. The squares were copied from a quilt made in the early 1900's and embroidered by Barbara Altenburg, Julie Berry, Juanita Campbell, Helen Desens, Corrine Drost, Shirley Erbsmehl, Robbin George, Jean Long, Shirley Martin, Fran Monachino, Judi Nickels, Desi Oventrop, Marilyn Raudenbush and Sue Speir. The quilt which measures 87" x 98", was pieced and machine quilted by Shirley Erbsmehl.
Raffle tickets which sell for $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00 may be purchased in advance by sending a check to Shirley Erbsmehl, 335 Chestnut Street, Fredonia, NY 14063 and/or they may be purchased at the annual PTG convention to be held June 19-24, 2006 in Rochester, NY. If not in attendance at the convention, the winner will be notified by phone and the quilt will be sent to them.

At our annual convention in Kansas City in June 2005, Shirley Erbsmehl introduced many of us to Redwork embroidery, a kind of needlework that is believed to have originated in 19 th century Europe and is experiencing renewed popularity among those who do embroidery and quilting today. The name Redwork derives from the fact that this type of embroidery is done exclusively using red cotton thread. It was also called Turkey Redwork because the special dye process of making the thread colorfast was developed in Turkey.
