MARCH 2006

COMING EVENTS

MARCH – The March meeting will be held Thursday, March 16 at 8:30 AM in the Music Building at Oklahoma Christian University in Edmond, Oklahoma. For the technical, each person in attendance needs to come prepared to briefly share one technical idea (2-3 minutes each) that they think, in whatever level of experience perspective they bring, would be helpful to the novice. This will not be so much of a singularly specific technical, but multi-faceted. Just in case of no-shows or lack of participation, Gary Bruce will be prepared to present a technical on the subject…”Aural Tuning: Do You Hear What I Hear?”

APRIL – The April meeting will be held Thursday, April 20 at 8:30 AM at the home of David and Barbara Bonham, 10717 Eastlake Circle, Oklahoma City. The technical will be presented by David and will be on problem solving with grand piano actions. The focus will be on translating symptoms (or customers’ complaints) into diagnoses and improving our skills in addressing them. Come with questions you may have on problems you’ve encountered.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family of Ben Davis whose brother passed away unexpectedly this month.

TECH TIP - SOUNDALIKES

I was called to a client’s home with a 5 foot Samick grand. The complaint was a knocking noise in certain notes which the client had identified with stickies. What I heard sounded exactly like a loose hammer on the shank and more of a clicking sound. It turned out to be a slightly loose flange screw. After tightening, the biggest part of the offending noise went away.

Experience has taught me that players can develop “myopic” hearing. They get fixated on the noisy notes. So before I had the client try out the “repair”, I did some hammer fitting to the string and made sure the unisons were really pure. That did the trick. So remember, if you hear something like a loose glue joint with the hammer on the shank it could also be the flange screw.

REMEMBER THEY VOTE…

Some guy bought a new fridge for his house. To get rid of his old fridge, he put it in his front yard and hung a sign on it saying: “Free to good home. You want it. You take it.” For three days the fridge sat there without even one person looking twice at it. He eventually decided that people were too un-trusting of this deal. It looked too good to be true so he changed the sign to read: “Fridge for sale $50.” The next day someone stole it. Caution!....THESE PEOPLE VOTE.

I had a call a few days ago from a lady who wanted her piano tuned. She said she worked, so I asked her what time would be convenient for her. She said “Oh anytime in the next day or so. My nine year old son is home from school.” I happened to say that I did not know school was out. She replied, “Well, it isn’t. He has the flu…” Needless to say I told her I would prefer tuning it at a later time when she would be home and after he was well. Everything worked out in due time.

A woman couldn’t find her luggage at the airport baggage area. So she went to the lost luggage office and told the man there that her bags never showed up. He smiled and told the woman not to worry because he was a trained professional and she was in good hands. “Now,” he asked her, “has your plane arrived yet?” HE ALSO VOTES…

A man was hanging out with a friend when they saw a woman with a nose ring attached to an earring by a chain. The man’s friend said, “Wouldn’t the chain rip out every time she turned her head?” The man explained that a person’s nose and ear remain the same distance apart no matter which way the head is turned…He ALSO votes…
