Obviously you guys havnt been useing the right pumice then.  French polishers use something often refered to as rotten stone. Its pumice alright, but it roughly equivilates to something in the neighboorhood of 1600 grit paper.  0000 steel wool is very rough in comparison.  In fact, if you use rotten stone with a bit of polisher you can end up with  more shine then you started with.  But if you use it with action cloth to buff off the shine.. you get this really nice satin finish thats flat it can be.

I think that's it exactly. I tried pumice, which proved to be 
too coarse and picked up dirt. I didn't have 800 grit paper 
available anywhere locally that I knew of or I would have 
tried that instead of 600. Probably still will (as apposed to 
steel wool) when I get some.
