Thanks for your reply.  I have yet to see an old Kawai with this problem, so I think Yamaha would have had a more suitable material available when they built the pianos but just didn't use it.  I used polyester cord from a local fabric store.  I believe it will last for more than 25 years without rotting.

  Ladies and Gentlemen,

  I have recently replaced all of the rotten hammer spring cords on Yamaha consoles, both American (1981) and Japanese (1970) made.  Does anyone know when Yamaha fixed this time-bomb problem?  Has anyone seen this problem with any of the Yamaha institutional pianos?
