Jack Spring Punchings

I've never seen jack spring punchings. Where do they go? Since I've never seen them, I guess I would have to say they are not needed

Are they really necessary?  Mr. Valley, in his mid-90's series "Behold the 
Upright" doesn't seem to think so.  What are the pros/cons?  The ones I got from 
Schaff are about twice the size of the well...is it worth the hassle?
