Piano Technician, Glenn Korff School of Music-Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts-University of Nebraska – Lincoln
The Glenn Korff School of Music in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine & Performing Arts of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is a professional, comprehensive arts institution devoted to the advancement of music and dance, the preparation of the next generation of arts professionals, and service to the arts professions/institutions throughout the region, state, nation, and world. The Music/Dance Faculty consists of an outstanding array of internationally acclaimed artists and scholars who care deeply about their students (more than 400 students are enrolled currently), and who work in close collaboration to serve the diverse mission of the Glenn Korff School of Music.
We are seeking an experienced piano technician to care for the diverse inventory of keyboard instruments in the Glenn Korff School of Music by tuning, regulating, voicing, and performing regular maintenance on the entire inventory. This work will support the research, creative activity, and service agenda of faculty and students in the Glenn Korff School of Music.  The regular responsibilities of this position will require occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs.    
Located in the very heart of the United States, Lincoln is one of America’s safest and most livable cities and was recently named a “top college town in America."  The University of Nebraska-Lincoln serves as the flagship campus for the state system, and its ease of access to local/regional offerings and airports is a tremendous asset. The city of Lincoln also boasts one of the strongest public-school systems in the country.  
The downtown Lincoln arts campus is alive with performances and musical collaborations presented by college and professional orchestras, university instrumental ensembles, and local arts organizations. Performances are held in the attached 800-seat Kimball Recital Hall, the attached 2300-seat Lied Center for the Performing Arts (recently named one of the finest college concert spaces in the country), as well as a number of outstanding concert spaces, venues, and sanctuaries throughout the community.
The Glenn Korff School of Music in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is currently seeking applications for the position of Piano Technician.
Duties and responsibilities: This position requires thorough and expert knowledge of keyboard instruments, as well as their care and maintenance. Strong planning and organizational skills are needed, and general computer literacy is a necessity.  An active commitment to the performing arts, including familiarity with standard concert and performance protocols, is also required.  
Duties include: 
  • Tuning, regulating, voicing, and regularly maintaining the current inventory of 115 pianos in the Glenn Korff School of Music
  • Replacing hammers, strings, action parts, etc. as needed on a routine basis
  • Preparing concert instruments for all performances and recitals by students, faculty, ensembles, and visiting artists
  • Advising the GKSOM administration concerning piano-related budgetary issues (purchase of new pianos, removal/sale of existing inventory, etc.)
  • Rebuilding and/or restoring instruments as time permits
  • Coordinating piano usage and moving in order to maximize efficient usage of the inventory
  • Maintaining an accurate and up-to-date inventory of GKSOM keyboard instruments, reporting annually to the University Inventory Department
  • Tuning and maintenance of GKSOM harpsichords, clavichords, and fortepiano
  • Educating faculty, students, and the public on the proper care of all keyboard instruments
  • Instructing a one-semester course in piano technology which is offered on a two year rotation
    Other duties:
  • As time permits, the technician will work with the administrative staff of the Lied Center for the Performing Arts to coordinate care and maintenance of instruments housed at the Lied, in addition to concert preparation and tuning for a variety of Lied Center performances and events.
  • Supervising work-study students, apprentices, or volunteer workers
  • Keeping a close watch on the climate control through the GKSOM
  • Serving as a resource for GKSOM faculty, staff, and students regarding piano-related issues
  • Offering logistical and educational support to local, regional, and national piano technicians (when appropriate and approved in advance by the Director of the GKSOM)
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director and/or Business Manager of the GKSOM
    Minimum qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s degree, established reputation as a professional piano technician
  • At least 2 years experience as professional piano technician in a piano shop, concert hall, performing arts center or university.
  • The ability to prepare a piano to the highest professional standards (set a precise temperament, a stable tuning, and a consistent concert regulation)  
  • Relevant coursework and/or specialized training in piano technology and tuning
    Preferred qualifications:
  • Registered Piano Technician through the Piano Technicians Guild
  • Steinway Factory training
  • Working knowledge of Yamaha Disklavier pianos
  • Experience tuning and maintaining historic keyboard instrument (including harpsichords, clavichords, and fortepianos)
  • Experience maintaining keyboard instruments within a college/university environment
